Are Homosexuals Criminals with No Rights
A poster from 1933
Stockholm, Riksarkivet

(In Denmark homosexuality was de-criminalized 1933)

This is understood to be one of the first public talks on homosexuality in Sweden and was given on Feb. 10
1933 by Eric Torsell (1898-1980). A year earlier Mr. Thorsell had made his way to and spent several
months in Berlin where he had attended Magnus Hirschfeld's Institute for Sexual Sciences and acquired
extensive knowledge on homosexuality; the poster for his lecture in Stockholm also referenced this fact.
Mr. Thorsell continued, into the seventies, to prove himself to be a proficient and enthralling guest-orator on
Homosexuality, although he never proclaimed himself to be gay. In 1951 and 1952, as the Swedish
delegate, he lectured at the ICSE's congress in Amsterdam and Frankfurt am Main. In his memoirs, in
1980, he states to have held Magnus Hirschfeld as his principle role-model.
