HOMOPHOBIA? MEDIA MENDACITY OVER OUTING - THE TRUTH BEHIND THE HEADLINES- Press coverage of the outing furore in 1994 and 1995 was one of the worst examples of media misrepresentation, double-standards, abuse and censorship. Concern about press intrusion is overshadowing the need for a 'right of reply' to redress inaccurate and inflammatory reporting. THE MAINSTREAMING OF GAY CULTURE? The greater cultural visibility of gay life is welcomed, but legal equality is still unrealised and media homophobia has merely become more subtle. Proposals for-Press Reform: the rules against press intrusion protect only royalty and the rich. New laws to stop media homophobia and dishonest reporting are needed.
